Perú proclamó su independencia del dominio español en 1821. En la primera mitad del siglo XIX, debido a la abolición de la esclavitud y la escasez de fuerza de trabajo, este país latinoamericano comenzó gradualmente el tráfico de culíes chinos. En octubre de 1849, los primeros 75 trabajadores chinos llegaron a Perú tras un viaje largo de 120 días por mar. En noviembre del mismo año, el gobierno peruano promulgó la Ley del Chino, luchando por la migración de trabajadores chinos a Perú. Tras la firma del Tratado de Tien Tsin entre China y Perú en 1874 y su entrada en vigor desde 1876, ambos países establecieron relaciones diplomáticas y el reinicio del tráfico de culíes se volvió imposible. Los culíes chinos sobrevivientes se convirtieron en trabajadores libres e ingresaron a la vida social peruana, realizando una gran contribución a la economía local. Entre toda la contribución económica, destacan el impacto económico directo sobre la agricultura peruana, la industria peruana (guano) y el sector de servicios peruano, y el impacto económico indirecto que ha tenido un efecto a largo plazo sobre el desarrollo económico posterior del Perú, incluidas la construcción de infraestructura y la colonización de la selva.
