Los inmigrantes chinos fueron uno de los grupos de extranjeros más numerosos en el norte de Chile, particularmente en las regiones de Tacna y Arica. Pese a sus aportes a la vida económica, social y cultural, los discursos políticos y de la prensa tendieron a enfatizar el peligro que significaban para el país y especialmente para esta región fronteriza. Este artículo analiza los tres grandes “peligros” que, según el discurso público, significaba la inmigración y presencia china para esta provincia: el peligro para el comercio, la salud y la nación. El estudio se sustenta en documentación del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile y Perú, administración chilena en Tacna y Arica, censos regionales y nacionales y artículos periodísticos.

El artículo analiza la primera obra de teatro escrita y publicada en Chile protagonizada por un inmigrante
chino: El Chino del autor peruano Ernesto Monge Wilhems (1878-1937), estrenada en 1925 y publicada en
1927 en la colección Lectura Selecta. Por medio de un análisis de la obra, proponemos que El Chino fue una
obra rupturista para su época. Aunque no exenta de racismo y estereotipos, Ernesto Monge Wilhems
construyó una imagen compleja del migrante chino que difería de la representación tradicional de las
personas chinas de la primera mitad del siglo XX.

Examina la presencia china en Chile durante el periodo 1880-1930, principalmente en las regiones de Antofagasta y Tarapacá. Se analizan tres componentes de la presencia china, incorporada a la sociedad regional nortina: qué se entiende por culíes y si es pertinente denominar culíes a la inmigración china anterior a 1884; de qué manera las enseñanzas del confucianismo constituyeron una orientación ética y espiritual en las colonias chinas y, por último, qué papel jugó el opio como signo de la cultura ancestral o significó una señal negativa ante la propia colonia y la sociedad nortina.

Registra los acontecimientos del Segundo Encuentro de Migración China en Chile y América Latina（第二届智利及拉丁美洲的华人移民) realizado el 9 de junio de 2019 en la ciudad de Cantón, Guangzhou. El evento fue organizado por el Instituto de Estudios de los Chinos de Ultramar, el Instituto de Estudios Latinoamericanos y la Escuela de Estudios Internacionales de la Universidad de Jinan （暨南大学) junto con el auspicio de la Universidad Central de Chile (UCEN). Durante el encuentro, se destacó la importancia de los estudios sobre las comunidades chinas en Latinoamérica, destacando su papel como puente sociocultural entre ambos mundos, así como un proceso social en constante movimiento y cambio a lo largo de la región. Durante el discurso de bienvenida, el vicepresidente de la Universidad de Jinan, Min Rao, recalcó el balance comercial China-LATAM y el incremento de las relaciones diplomáticas, procesos en los cuales los inmigrantes chinos juegan un papel importante. Por su parte, el profesor Jorge Gabriel Moraga Reyes de la Universidad Central de Chile comentó sobre los problemas inherentes a los estudios sobre la inmigración china en la región latinoamericana.
