Esta tesis analiza como cuestión fundamental las peculiaridades y diferencias de los hakka en el proceso de migración en China y Perú, y como cuestión de base, la supuesta invisibilidad que envuelve al grupo subétnico hakka. Se plantea una nueva mirada a un viejo tema: la inmigración china al Perú, a partir del estudio de un grupo específico, los hakka, desde su proceso de migración en China –siglo III y IV- hasta su llegada el Perú, en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Se pone en relieve la presencia permanente y tácita de los hakka como grupo importante en China y el Perú a partir de sus distintas manifestaciones culturales de índole material o inmaterial. Se emplea el método etnográfico con observación directa y participante, desde un enfoque cualitativo con entrevistas a profundidad, grupos focales, historias de vida e historias de clanes, testimonios y narrativas durante el trabajo de campo realizado en China y el Perú. Cabe destacar el uso de fuentes chinas y la traducción de materiales e informaciones vinculantes. Se concluye que los hakka son un grupo diferenciado dentro de la etnia Han, con dinámicas particulares en el proceso de migración, lo cual pone en evidencia y confirma la diversidad que existe entre los grupos de inmigrantes chinos que llegaron al Perú desde 1849. En el marco de los 170 años de la inmigración china en el Perú, esta investigación intenta diseccionar el bloque cantonés para poner en relieve al grupo hakka y sus valiosos aportes. A mediados del siglo XIX e inicios del siglo XX, el Perú recibió una masiva cantidad de inmigrantes chinos. En la presente investigación se aborda el impacto que este fenómeno migratorio tuvo en la Lima comercial de la segunda mitad del siglo XX, reflejado en la evolución urbana y arquitectónica de la calle Capón y las galerías comerciales ubicadas en esta. Es así como el artículo investiga en primer lugar la consolidación del espacio público de la calle Capón a partir de la construcción y comercialización de las galerías, posteriormente explora la funcionalidad y transformación del comercio en el interior de las galerías y finalmente investiga, desde un enfoque estilístico, el lenguaje arquitectónico utilizado, como expresión de la cultura china y el mestizaje producido por el fenómeno migratorio en las fachadas. Las tres galerías comerciales investigadas están ubicadas en la calle Capón, las cuales son: Galería Comercial “Barrio Chino” ubicada formalmente en el Jr. Ucayali 724-738 cuyo año de construcción se remonta a 1981 y remodelada en el año 2001, el segundo caso de estudio es la Galería Comercial “Capón” ubicada en Jr. Ucayali 765, construida entre 1965 y 1975; y el último caso de estudio es el Centro Comercial “Ton-Pho” ubicado en Jr. Ucayali 762-766-774- 778 construido en 1977 y remodelado en los años 2000 y 2018. Es así como investigación concluye, principalmente, afirmando que las galerías comerciales también son parte del patrimonio edificado de la inmigración china en el Perú. Entre 1848 y 1874, fueron importados cerca de cien mil chinos al Perú para que trabajaran en las islas guaneras, en los ferrocarriles, pero fundamentalmente en las plantaciones de algodón y azúcar de los valles de la Costa. A los emigrantes se les decía que el Perú era el País de las colinas de Oro (ya que estaba situado en la misma costa que California), donde podrían lograr la felicidad y la riqueza; sin embargo, al llegar aquí se encontraban con un país de colinas de arena donde sólo les esperaba la miseria y la crueldad; aún cuando esta inmigración se produjo sobre la base de contratos de trabajo con un plazo establecido y a pesar de que la esclavitud había sido abolida legalmente al comienzo del período mencionado. Este libro pretende revelar esa parte poco conocida de nuestra historia, con la ayuda de las fuentes jurídicas; y, además, repensar el papel social del Derecho a la luz ele esta perturbadora experiencia.
