Desde su llegada al Perú hace 160 años, los chinos han luchado por formar una comunidad. Enfrentado con duras condiciones de vida, esparcidas en haciendas, privados de mujeres chinas y sufriendo del racismo, el maltrato y las leyes de inmigración restrictivas, la tarea de mantenerse vivo parecía insuperable. Paradójicamente, el surgimiento y consolidación de la comunidad china surgió a través del mestizaje y la conversión al catolicismo. Este mestizaje les permitió reconstruir la estructura familiar china, aunque apareció una jerarquía interna dependiendo del grado de mestizaje. La Iglesia Católica también jugó un papel como artífice de la identidad china ayudando desde el principio con la organización de asociaciones y fortaleciendo el sentido de pertenencia y reconocimiento de los tusanes (tusheng en mandarín) o "nativos locales" como parte de la comunidad china. Sin embargo, los nuevos inmigrantes de China, llegados desde la década de 1980, han impugnado la legitimidad de los tusanes y planteado nuevos desafíos a la comunidad china local. ¿Cómo y en qué medida esta nueva inmigración china ha cambiado la vida comunitaria y reforzó/debilitó la identidad tusán? Este artículo describe el desarrollo histórico de la antigua comunidad china y analiza la interacción entre los tusanes y los chinos recién llegados.

Describe, analiza y explica la actividad teatral que los inmigrantes chinos desarrollaron durante su proceso de inserción a la sociedad peruana y especialmente la limeña. Se considera como hipótesis que los inmigrantes convirtieron esta manifestación en un espacio a través del cual podían negociar su inclusión y conseguir el reconocimiento público al que aspiraban. Así, el teatro en tanto arte escénico, lugar de interacción y espacio destinado a las representaciones pudo convertirse en un ente mediador en el cual los inmigrantes evaluaban los términos de su inclusión en tanto minoría cultural dentro de las estructuras nacionales más amplias. El teatro siendo una expresión muy arraigada dentro de la cultura china, y reproducido en el Perú como parte de la diversidad cultural que expresaba parte de la identidad china, fue cambiando de sentidos desde las primeras décadas del siglo XX, cuando las élites chinas replantearon los términos de su inclusión dentro de la sociedad peruana. La adaptación de la práctica teatral, que implicó dejar atrás las prácticas teatrales tradicionales con todo lo que ello implicaba, generó además un nuevo tipo de opinión pública hacia los chinos y su cultura, que dejó de lado el prejuicio hacia ellos para exaltar su plasticidad cultural.

Ofrece un acercamiento al tema de la diáspora china desde el punto de vista histórico, con el fin de llenar el vacío existente, poniendo lo poco que se sabe del tema en el contexto de la discusión sobre la diáspora, para enfatizar la transnacionalidad y la multiplicidad de identidades de este grupo de migrantes. Lejos de ser un grupo homogéneo, los miembros de la diáspora china tienen distintos antecedentes económicos, culturales, sociales, educativos y personales, así como historias de vida y emigración muy diferentes. A pesar del creciente interés académico en la cuenca del Pacífico y en la constante inmigración china hacia América en el siglo XX, casi no existe información sobre los chinos en Colombia. Por otra parte, el artículo analiza las diferencias y similitudes entre la inmigración china en Colombia y la de otros países de América Latina y de otros continentes, relacionando esas particularidades con el contexto local.

Los cuentos reunidos en El tramo final (1986) del escritor chino-peruano Siu Kam Wen (Guangdong, 1951) despliegan a la colonia china en el Perú como una región cultural diseminada. Esta región se configura en la medida en que los chinos, tras despojarse del estigma de inferioridad que los marcó en un inicio, diseminan sus raíces por diferentes zonas y estratos de la ciudad de Lima, e incluso, por latitudes que se erigen más allá de la misma.

Pretende contribuir al entendimiento mutuo, la tolerancia y la buena convivencia entre los españoles y sus vecinos chinos, tanto China como España han experimentado cambios históricos en las últimas décadas. Los españoles fueron emigrantes hace años y ahora están haciéndose anfitrión recibiendo el mundo en su casa; el cambio de roles dentro de tan poco tiempo es un desafío. En cuanto a los inmigrantes chinos todavía están mareados por el cambio de entorno. Se espera abrir una ventana para que los chinos se conozcan mejor que antes a través de esta investigación cualitativa sobre las mujeres trabajadoras inmigrantes del norte de China en España.

Este libro selecciona algunas de las ponencias presentadas durante el Simposio Internacional sobre Estudios de China, realizado los días 18 y 19 de junio de 2012 en Puntaneras. Estudios sobre China desde Latinoamérica: Geopolítica, Religión e Inmigración consta de un estado de cuestión sobre estudios sinológicos o sobre China hechos desde Costa Rica, cuatro secciones temáticas y una reseña que muestra la inserción de elementos culturales chinos en el desarrollo de la fi latelia internaciona. La primera sección temática analiza la inserción de China en el sistema mundo moderno. En la segunda sección temática se explora las relaciones internacionales y la geopolítica china contemporánea desde dos estudios de caso. En la tercera sección temática se examinan las políticas educativas en la China contemporánea. La cuarta parte de este libro analiza la inserción de los inmigrantes chinos en Latinoamérica con un énfasis en los casos de Cuba y Costa Rica.

Se centra en tres estructuras "tradicionales" altamente entrelazadas: jia (familias), guanxi (relaciones) y mianzi (cara o máscara).

Realiza una descripción de las particularidades de la comunidad china y taiwanesa en Buenos Aires. Recorre la historia de la migración china y taiwanesa hacia Argentina y los cambios que se están registrando en los últimos años, con la nueva posición de China en la economía mundial. Proponemos que la diáspora china y taiwanesa pueden ser pensadas como “puentes”, ya que los taiwaneses se re identifican como “chinos” alegando una pertenencia ancestral al legado cultural chino, y los chinos continentales están ocupando el lugar asignado por el estado chino para sus diásporas: ser un eslabón en el proceso de expansión económica chino, intermediando entre la sociedad de recepción y la madre patria.
