Busca lograr el reconocimiento de la comunidad china mediante la enunciación de su aportes a la cultura peruana, y realiza un esbozo histórico de los periodos de la inmigración china al Perú caracterizado por las contrataciones, el trabajo en las haciendas, en fondas y diversos oficios, la formación de asociaciones y la constitución de empresas comerciales.

La celebración del sesquicentenario de la emigración de trabajadores de la tierra del dragón a las regiones del cóndor en el año 1999 puede considerarse oportuna aun teniendo en cuenta que en realidad la historia de la inmigración china en el Perú es cuatricentenaria y se extiende desde el siglo XVI cuando arribaron al Callao un número indeterminado de chinos residentes en las Filipinas conocidos como sangleyes. El presente ensayo destaca el desarrollo social e intelectual de la comunidad peruano china a través de sus organizaciones sociales, comerciales y culturales y sus contribuciones económicas y culturales.

Al 2003, la integración social de los inmigrantes constituye un imperativo del Estado español como una demanda de la sociedad civil y las organizaciones de inmigrantes. Si bien las instituciones locales afirman que la población china no demuestra un interés particular por integrarse a esta sociedad, en los últimos años las asociaciones voluntarias chinas han desarrollado una serie de estrategias que han provocado un mayor acercamiento a las administraciones públicas, produciendo a su vez particulares elaboraciones discursivas sobre la integración social de su colectivo. En este artículo la autora analiza la forma en que las instituciones y sus agentes –procedentes del colectivo chino y de la sociedad receptora– conciben y/o aplican en sus prácticas, ciertas acciones vinculadas a la “integración social”. Para ello, delimita esta observación a las asociaciones voluntarias chinas, la cual ejemplifica los conflictos y paradojas de los procesos de integración social cuando las organizaciones de inmigrantes se encuentran expuestas a requerimientos desiguales por parte del país de origen y el país de destino.

A mediados del siglo XIX los primeros inmigrantes chinos fueron traídos al Perú para amortiguar la escasez de mano de obra. Llegaron a una sociedad cerrada que los forzó a sobrevivir bajo condiciones marginales y vulnerables. Con el transcurso de las décadas y de manera paulatina construyeron una comunidad integrada a la sociedad peruana. La principal conclusión de este artículo es que la alta movilidad social, incluso mayor que la de los habitantes nativos, fue resultado de una serie de tácticas empleadas por los chinos a lo largo de su vida cotidiana. Este comportamiento explica por qué en la actualidad los «chinos» constituyen uno de los grupos inmigrantes con mayor inserción en la sociedad peruana que cualquier otro grupo étnico inmigrante.

Estudia del pensamiento del filósofo sanmarquino Pedro Salvino Zulen Aymar (1889-1925). Se consideran los siguientes problemas: ¿Cómo se determinan los periodos intelectuales a partir de su obra escrita? y ¿Cuáles son los fundamentos de la noción de educación, hombre y filosofía?. Para esto, se presenta cronológicamente los periodos de reflexión en la vida intelectual del autor partiendo de un proceso de análisis- síntesis de sus obras escritas tanto publicadas como no publicadas (materiales inéditos) desde los cuales se determina la reflexión en cada periodo, temas que involucran una visión filosófica en sus conceptualizaciones sobre educación, hombre y filosofía. Los periodos propuestos son tres: Tránsito del positivismo al pragmatismo (1904-1911), Deslinde social - humanista (1912-1918), Académico - filosófico (1920-1925). Presenta un repertorio bibliográfico partiendo del ya realizado por su hermana Esther Zulen en 1925, e incrementándolo con escritos desconocidos como parte de una nueva bibliografía.

La mayoría de los chinos que emigraron a América Latina y el Caribe durante el siglo XIX provenían de la provincia de Guangdong y sobre todo de su capital, una ciudad cosmopolita con una historia comercial de 2.200 años. Los culíes, una vez librados de sus contratos forzados, se dedicaron a desarrollar sus dotes para el comercio: en Panamá conectaron los centros urbanos con los pueblos del interior, en Jamaica constituyeron la primera burguesía local y en Sonora, México, prosperaron tanto que fueron expulsados. Pero el mejor ejemplo es Perú, donde la modesta tienda del señor Wong se convirtió en la principal cadena de supermercados del país, en una muestra más de la habilidad comercial de los inmigrantes chinos y de su capacidad para insertarse, convivir y prosperar en América Latina.
