El presente libro estudia las dinámicas de representación social de la comunidad china en el territorio ecuatoriano, los aporte culturales, la identidad y sus actividades económicas, ante la escasa literatura que existe sobre la migración y presencia china en el Ecuador, especialmente si se compara con Colombia y Perú. Abarca la migración e historia de la diáspora, las relaciones diplomáticas y la Franja y la Ruta. Pretende ser el primer esfuerzo investigativo multidisciplinario en Ecuador sobre la migración china, su impacto y las propuestas al desarrollo global vinculado a la Franja y la Ruta.

La presente investigación realizó un estudio etnográfico e histórico del posicionamiento en el espacio de los colectivos de descendientes chinos y japoneses en Tapachula, Chiapas. El interés se centra en la representación espacial de cada uno de estos grupos, y por otro lado, en los discursos que dan los pobladores de Tapachula, los medios de comunicación locales y las instituciones públicas locales y nacionales de la presencia de las comunidades chinas y japonesas en la costa de Chiapas. El argumento central de esta tesis es que las personas con descendencia china y japonesa negocian su posición social-espacial en el campo de poder del espacio social tapachulteco, mediante el uso estratégico de capital simbólico y pertenencia a una red social, intencional o no intencionalmente, en el contexto local y transnacional a partir de sus interacciones sociales en la ciudad. Los grupos sociales en Tapachula se construyen en el marco de una lucha por capitales económicos, políticos, sociales y culturales, esta investigación se basó en sostener que a través de la noción de campo de poder de Pierre Bourdieu (1980) y de espacio social de Henri Lefebvre (2013), los actores establecen diversos discursos y prácticas que realizan no conscientemente, para lograr posicionarse en la estructura social acomodada en la región del Soconusco. La posición socio-espacial es relevante para estos actores sociales, ya que las instituciones locales, medios de comunicación, organismos de China y Japón, así como la población local de Tapachula, reconocen su pertenencia a un grupo privilegiado en la ciudad, para obtener beneficios políticos, económicos y educativos.

Desde mediados del siglo XIX y por aproximadamente 25 años los chinos inmigraron en búsqueda de mejores horizontes. hasta que en 1874 se corta el tráfico de los "culi'. Los chinos encontraron en las nuevas tierras esclavitud o semiesclauitud. Esta situación, impulsó a cientos de ellos a optar por la fuga, a este fenómeno se le denominó dmarronaje. El siguiente artículo hace una descripción de los cimarrones y sus características a partir de los anuncios de fugas publicados.

Da a conocer al chino emigrante desde el puerto donde se embarcó a Perú hasta que pasado siglo y medio algunos de ellos logran formar un árbol genealógico. Por lo tanto, se da a conocer Macao y sus creencias, costumbres y cultura de los chinos que ahí residían. Se tiene en cuenta cómo fue el tráfico de gente "trata amarilla", sus actores y el ambiente de traslado de cargazones de culíes, así como las vicisitudes durante la travesía. Luego de miles de culíes finalizaron sus años de contrata casi todos los sobrevivientes permanecieron en Perú, por ello se aborda sus oficios, actividades económicas y comerciales y estrategias de organización y defensa. Destaca la influencia de la comida cantonesa entre los peruanos. Se presenta detalles sobre la vida política de los chinos del valle del Jequetepeque y el proceso de peruanización de los chinos en Zaña. Dedica un capítulo especial a los chinos que se asentaron en el distrito limeño del Rímac.

Este trabajo bibliográfico es un intento de facilitar a los investigadores de historia y ciencias sociales –o a cualquier otra persona interesada- lo que hasta 1984 se encuentra publicado sobre los chinos en el Perú; así como señalar las fuentes a las que se puede acudir para ahondar los distintos temas de investigación histórica respecto a esos inmigrantes. Toda esta obra es más útil para quienes investiguen acerca de los 100,000 chinos llamados culíes, que casi forzadamente. inmigraron entre 1849 y 1874. La presente bibliografía fue lograda a partir de sustanciales avances de recopilaciones bibliográficas que se encuentran en las obras de varios investigadores contemporáneos (W. Derpich, M. Femández y Germán Granda, Pablo Macera, Luis Millones, Watt Stewart).

Aborda uno de los tantos amotinamientos y naufragios de los culíes. En 1868 la barca Cayaltí de bandera peruana es tomada por un grupo de culíes junto a sus tripulantes y pasajeros. El amotinamiento muestra el desacuerdo de los chinos, viajeros forzados, que ante una circunstancia de menor control deciden sublevarse y buscar el retorno a su Celeste Imperio.

¿Sabías que casi a finales del siglo XIX se inauguró la primera escuela china en el Perú?. Rodríguez Pastor narra cómo era este colegio y quiénes fueron a la ceremonia de apertura.
Esta escuela chino-peruana –así se llamó- fue inaugurada el 14 de mayo de 1888, su local se hallaba en la calle Pileta de Santa Rosa de las Monjas# 120 altos (actualmente 6ta cuadra del jirón. Ayacucho cerca del Barrio Chino).
La escuela contaba en un principio con 32 alumnos y dos profesores, uno de primaria, peruano, y otro en idioma chino. Se empezaría por primaria con niños de 6 a 11 años, en breve se podría duplicar el número de estudiantes.

No era nada extraño que en los barcos chineros llegaran como culíes niños y niñas cantoneses a los que con frecuencia se les destinó a los quehaceres domésticos. Este tráfico solo era continuación de la trata de esclavos africanos; es decir, niños y niñas esclavos de piel oscura tuvieron en el virreinato similar ubicación en el orden social. Un ejemplo al paso: hemos hallado en libros de bautizo de la parroquia El Sagrario -al costado de la catedral limeña-, 17 niños chinos domésticos que en promedio tenían 11 años.
Algo de esto sucedió con Pedro José del Carmen Véliz (1847-1926) cuyo patronímico chino inicial desconocemos, y a quien a los 25 años fue bautizado justamente en la iglesia del Sagrario de la Catedral y sus padrinos fueron sus patrones: Mateo Véliz y Rita Durán de Véliz. Antes de cumplir con este sacramento Pedro José fue catequizado por Dominga Gazcón quien tuvo esta labor en esa parroquia, lo mismo hizo con otros orientales seguramente cumpliendo con sus creencias religiosas y a solicitud del párroco.
