Aborda la composición étnico social de las madres de descendientes chinos pertenecientes a 6 o 7 generaciones desde que llegaron los primeros inmigrantes desde Guandong y Fujian (China) hace 170 años. Esta diversidad étnica y cultural produjo un mestizaje cultural peruano chino. El autor resalta que si existe una gran variedad étnica de madres de tusanes, los hijos culturalmente llevan bagajes étnico-culturales de distintos matices.

Hijos del Celeste Imperio es una obra cuya investigación duró aproximadamente 15 años y estuvo destinada a dar a conocer ese período decimonónico de enorme importancia en la agricultura costeña peruana en el que fue el chino culí el principal personaje creador directo –lampa machete en mano- de la riqueza que allí se originó. Si él no hubiera estado presente, muy diferente hubiera sido la historia peruana de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y las repercusiones posteriores. Ese es el aporte de Hijos del Celeste Imperio. Téngase en cuenta también que sin el chino, que llegó hace más de 150 años, no se hubiera producido la corriente migratoria asiática y no hubiera ocurrido ese frecuente mestizaje biológico y cultural, una de cuyas cuotas fue la que ofrecieron los inmigrantes chinos. La obra tuvo la inmensa ventaja de recurrir, entre muchas otras, a la documentación de algunas de las haciendas – reunidas en el Archivo Agrario- en las que estuvo presente el trabajador culí. Fue una fuente inmensamente rica que para superarla sólo hubiera sido posible utilizar registros similares pero de un mayor volumen que las toneladas de papeles plenos de información fueron base de la obra.

Por conocer que el doctor Manuel Burga Díaz, reciente electo rector de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, tiene antecesores chinos, en Oriental se consideró conveniente conversar con él. Interesaba que nos diga algo sobre los chinos del valle del Jequetepeque, donde se encuentra Chepén, activo pueblo norteño del departamento de La Libertad donde el rector nació hace algo más de medio siglo. Tuvimos en cuenta además que el Dr. Burga fue autor de la obra De la encomienda a la hacienda capitalista. El valle del Jequetepeque del siglo XVI al XX. Era, pues, evidente que podía decirnos bastante sobre lo que había averiguado como historiador o de lo que recordaba por sus propias experiencias personales de esa importante colonia asiática de Chepén y del valle. Con este motivo y revisando viejos ejemplares de Oriental, encontramos que el año 1935, su primer director, Alfredo Chang, hizo en ese año una visita a Chepén esa “...floreciente y simpática población...” donde le impresionó “...el sólido y bellísimo edificio propiedad de la Sociedad Comercial China...” lo que a su vez indicaba “...la excelente situación de que disfrutan los muy conocidos comerciantes (chinos)...”. Esta apreciación no cambió durante años. Por eso en todas las décadas sucesivas no ha sido nunca extraño encontrar en nuestras páginas información sobre la colonia china chepenana… El encargado de hacer la entrevista fue el Dr. Humberto Rodríguez Pastor (HRP), conocido investigador de la historia de los Hijos del Celeste Imperio en el Perú.

Durante el siglo XIX, como continuación de la trata de esclavos, cientos de miles de culíes chinos llegaron a Perú, donde se instalaron en las haciendas y poco a poco fueron desplegando sus costumbres, aromas y sabores. Uno de los ejemplos más notables de este despliegue es la proliferación de «chifas», populares restaurantes de comida oriental que se multiplican por las calles de Lima y otras ciudades del país. Allí se sirve el «chaufa», el clásico arroz frito, que se consume en su versión clásica o «peruanizada», con carne de res, mariscos y hasta ají. El éxito de la comida chino-peruana es un ejemplo de transculturación que revela los antiguos lazos entre ambos países.

La inmigración china al Perú en el siglo XIX devino en un fenómeno cultural por el cual en la actualidad el consumo de chaufa, lomo saltado, sillao, kion (o jengibre), cebolla china se ha generalizado en los hogares peruanos y se ha masificado en una variedad de propuestas de chifa. Este fenómeno ha tenido un proceso muy complejo, en el que cuentan diversos factores: las modalidades en que los inmigrantes chinos han ido compenetrándose con los pobladores nacionales; las posibilidades culturales gustativas de aceptación y asimilación; la formación de una corriente permanente de obtención y comercialización de los productos de la culinaria china, así como la creciente aparición de una diversidad de negocios de venta.

La cultura china se distingue por su civilidad, cortesía, decoro y por la tendencia a reprimir emociones negativas en pos de mantener relaciones interpersonales armoniosas (Gao, 2008; Liu 2014). A diferencia de la cultura española, donde existe una mayor libertad para exhibirlas, su control en la comunidad china es especialmente notable cuando existe una diferencia jerárquica (Gu, 1990). En pos de observar la manifestación de las emociones de ambas culturas y estudiar su adecuación a un contexto académico, nos hemos propuesto realizar un análisis descriptivo en el cual se identifican y clasifican las emociones exhibidas según la taxonomía de Pekrun y Linnenbrink-García (2012) en un corpus de 100 correos electrónicos redactados por alumnos universitarios nativos españoles y universitarios chinos aprendientes de español, residentes en China o inmigrados en España. Los resultados sugieren que los participantes chinos no actuaron conforme a las características prototípicas de su cultura ni se ajustaron a un registro y estilo apropiados en español académico.

La autora enumera las críticas y aciertos que el público a nivel mundial asignaron a la película. Esta comedia romántica demuestra que las actrices y actores descendientes de Asia pueden calzar en roles alejados de los estereotipos y personajes de relleno. Mayor diversidad étnica y representación es posible.

A lo largo del siglo XX, la industria hollywoodense y la cultura dominante (mainstream) no solo ha perpetuado estereotipos ofensivos sobre la comunidad asiática en el cine, el teatro y la televisión, sino que también ha sido el principal promotor del whitewashing, una práctica centrada en blanquear las características de otros fenotipos no blancos en beneficio de una imagen más caucásica atractiva para la audiencia occidental.
El término whitewashing o blanqueo, se emplea en el ámbito cinematográfico y hace mención a la escogencia de un actor/actriz blanca para interpretar un personaje de origen étnico y características explícitamente no caucásicas. Durante las primeras décadas del desarrollo de Hollywood, fue una práctica común que se sumó a la ya cimentada tradición del blackface y la posterior yellowface, todo en aras de exagerar (e incluso mofarse) los estereotipos de distintos grupos raciales.
