Every wave rams Bing Han’s homesickness deeper into his belly. The boat moves in every direction, except the one back home.
Arriving on the busy docks of Singapore, Bing Han is relieved to find Tik Tjoe. Surrounded by strange-looking people talking strange-sounding languages, he follows Tik Tjoe to an inn which, just like the one in Amoy, is also called the Zhangzhou Inn. Tik Tjoe knows everyone there, and everyone appears to speak Bing Han’s Zhangzhou dialect.
Tik Tjoe & the Tian Yi Private Postal Exchange
Tik Tjoe comes from the village next to Bing Han’s and their families have been close for generations. Tik Tjoe works for the Tian Yi Private Postal Exchange, which functions as a ‘one-stop-shop’ emigration agency with branches all across southeast Asia. Tik Tjoe explains to Bing Han that in addition to the travel arrangements, he will also be organizing the transfers of money and letters that Bing Han is expected to send back home.
Home. Bing Han asks why they have to go so far from home. Tik Tjoe responds that he knows people with sugar plantations in Semarang who are in need of labor, and will pay decent money to the workers as well as the Postal Exchange for recruiting them. Because their families have been friends for so long, Tik Tjoe has agreed to lend Bing Han’s family the considerable money required for the journey’s advance payment.
Tik Tjoe keeps talking, but Bing Han only hears one word that keeps ringing in his mind: ‘home’.

Cada ola agita profundamente la nostalgia en el vientre de Bing Han. El barco se mueve en todas las direcciones excepto en la de vuelta a casa.
Bing Han está aliviado de encontrar a Tik Tjoe al llegar a los concurridos muelles de Singapur. Rodeado de gente de aspecto extraño que habla idiomas de sonidos extraños, sigue a Tik Tjoe hacia una posada, que al igual que la de Amoy, también es conocida como “la posada de Zhangzhou”. Tik Tjoe conoce a todo el mundo allí, y todo el mundo parece hablar el dialecto de Zhangzhou, tal y como Bing Han.
Tik Tjoe y el servicio postal privado Tian Yi
Tik Tjoe viene de una aldea adyacente a aquella en la que Bing Han y sus familiares han estado durante generaciones. Tik Tjoe trabaja para el servicio postal privado Tian Yi que funciona como una agencia de emigración de ‘ventanilla única’ con sedes instaladas a lo largo del sureste asiático. Tik Tjoe le explica a Bing Han que, además de los arreglos del viaje, también se encarga de organizar las transferencias de dinero y las cartas que Bing Han espera enviar a casa.
La casa. Bing Han pregunta por qué tienen que ir tan lejos de casa. 抵达了新加坡繁忙的码头之后，炳翰庆幸自己终于找到了德慈。
周围都是陌生的面孔，说着陌生的语言。炳翰跟着德慈去了一家会馆，这里跟厦门的会馆很类似，也叫漳州会馆。德慈认识那里的每一个人，而且似乎大家也操着和炳翰一样的漳州口音。
德慈和天一私人转运邮局
德慈来自炳翰老家的邻村，与炳翰一家世代交好。德慈在天一私人转运邮局工作，这是一个“一站式”移民中介，其分支机构遍布东南亚的国家和地区。德慈向炳翰解释说，除了安排旅途行程，他还负责转递炳翰需要寄回家的现金和信件。
家——炳翰问，他们为何要离家如此之远？德慈回答道，他知道三堡垄港那里正在种植甘蔗，需要劳动力，可以给劳工们和招聘劳工的转运邮局提供不错的报酬。
因为两家的多年交好，德慈答应借给炳翰的家人本次出行所需的一大笔预付费用。德慈滔滔不绝地说着，而炳翰的脑海里却只回荡着一个词——家。
