La decisión de quedarse en China en 2004 y de averiguar sus raíces en Fujian cambió todo. “Caminando por esos pueblos ancestrales en Fujian y Jinmen, por los mismos senderos de arena en los que hace seis generaciones mis antepasados caminaban, de pie frente al mismo altar donde yacían mis antepasados, me dio la sensación de estar a gusto y conectado: conectado con la historia, con el mundo de hoy, y sobre todo, conectado conmigo mismo.” En 2012, estableció la start-up My China Roots para asistir descendientes chinos en todo el mundo en sus propias búsquedas y exploraciones de raíces e identidad.

How did your ancestors make their migration journey? How does one travel to a new beginning? The story below follows a typical Chinese emigrant on his way to Semarang, some 100 years ago.
It is 1912, the first year of the Republic of China. Bing Han has just turned 16 and is about to leave his village in Zhangzhou, Fujian province. He has never left home, but now needs to make a journey of 4000km. He is scared.
Equipped with straw sandals, an umbrella, and a bag of food, Bing Han sets off for Semarang in Indonesia, where his brother Bing Yao has already been living for four years. Their oldest brother, Bing Swie, has to stay at home to till the fields and take care of their parents.
The Zhangzhou Inn in Amoy

With feet of lead, Bing Han walks to the city of Zhangzhou, which takes a day. From there, he goes on a flat-bottomed wooden boat to daunting Amoy (Xiamen), the bustling emigration hub of Fujian. In Amoy, Bing Han stays at the ‘Zhangzhou Inn’, whose guests all come from Zhangzhou and who all seem to be going to Semarang.
They will need to go to a place called Singapore first. There, Bing Han will meet Tik Tjoe, who is organizing the whole trip and will bring him to Bing Yao. Tik Tjoe has partnered with the Zhangzhou Inn for years and he has arranged that its owner gives Bing Han his boat ticket.

After several lonely days of waiting at the Inn, the boat for Singapore is ready to leave. Bing Han follows the other guests to the harbor and nervously approaches the intimidating, metal steam boat.

¿Cómo fue el viaje migratorio de tus antepasados? ¿Cómo se viaja hacia un nuevo comienzo? La siguiente historia describe al típico emigrante chino en su camino a Semarang hace unos 100 años.
Es 1912, el primer año de la República de China. Bing Han acaba de cumplir 16 años y está a punto de abandonar su aldea en Zhangzhou, provincia de Fujian. Nunca ha salido de casa pero ahora tendrá que hacer un viaje de 4000 km. Está asustado.

Equipado con unas sandalias de paja, un paraguas y una bolsa de comida, Bing Han parte para Semarang, en Indonesia, donde su hermano Bing Yao ha estado viviendo por cuatro años. Su hermano mayor, Bing Swie, tiene que quedarse en casa para cultivar los campos y cuidar a sus padres.
“La posada Zhangzhou”, en Amoy

Arrastrando los pies como plomos, Bing Han camina a la ciudad de Zhangzhou, tardando un día entero. Desde ahí va en un barco de madera con fondo plano a la intimidante Amoy (Xiamen), el bullicioso centro de emigración de Fujian. En Amoy, Bing Han se queda en “la posada Zhangzhou”, donde todos los huéspedes provienen de Zhangzhou y parecen ir a Semarang.

Tendrán que ir primero a un lugar llamado Singapur. Allí, Bing Han se encontrará con Tik Tjoe, quien está organizando el viaje y lo llevará con Bing Yao. Tik Tjoe tiene años asociado con “la posada Zhangzhou” y ya ha coordinado con el dueño para que le dé a Bing Han el boleto de barco.

您的祖先是如何开始移民之路的？人们如何开启一段新的旅程？下面一则故事讲述了大约100年前一名普通华人移民到三堡垄港的历程。
那是在1912年，中华民国元年。炳翰刚满16岁，正打算离开福建漳州的家乡。从未离开过家乡的他，如今却要远行4000公里，心里很是害怕。
穿着草鞋，带着一把雨伞和一袋食物，炳翰踏上了奔赴印尼三堡垄港的旅程，而他的哥哥炳耀已经在那里生活了四年。他们的长兄，炳水，只得留在家里经营田地，照顾父母。
厦门漳州会馆
炳翰花了一天时间，步履艰难地步行到漳州市区。从那里，他乘坐一艘平底木船赶赴那个福建地区热闹繁华的移民集散地——厦门。在那里，炳翰住在漳州会馆，这里的访客都是来自于漳州，而且几乎全部都要前往三堡垄港。
首先，炳翰要到一个叫做新加坡的地方。在那里，他将与德慈汇合，此人是整趟旅程的组织者，由他带领炳翰去见炳耀。德慈与漳州酒会馆合作多年，他托会馆的负责人给炳翰订了一张船票。
